Murray’s Delicacies

July 24, 2010

It’s really fun when you discover something that’s been in your neighborhood for years and finally get a chance to experience it for yourself. It started when I needed a birthday gift for my father-in-law who migrated begrudingly from New York to North Carolina. He always complains that he can’t find any good food, especially Italian food, in the south; yet funny enough he has found a who circle of northerners to commiserate with no problem. So every birthday, Father’s Day and Christmas I am on the search for food that I can ship from NYC to send a little bit of home his way. It started with bread baskets from Eli Zabar’s which was such a hit that I think we repeated the gift at least twice. For $55 you get 4 different loaves of freshly baked bread complete with a branded bread knife.

This year’s challenge was salumi. I discovered that Murray’s Cheese on Bleecker Street also has an e-commerce site for cheese, salumi, and other giftable food items that complement meat and cheese like jam and chocolate. Lo and behold I found the mecca charcuterie and sent my father-in-law a selection of salami and other cured meats plus some crunchy signature cheese sticks to go with it. Let’s just say he was more than pleased.

We later found out in New York Magazine that one of Murray’s breakfast sandwiches was rated one of the Top 101 Best Sandwiches of New York, so we knew we had to make a visit. I’ll let the Grub Street experts describe it for you, “Your basic drippy, greasy, hangover-soothing, soul-satisfying egg sandwich elevated by top-notch ingredients: a farmstead egg, smoky Nueske’s bacon, and a brash young Fontina that melts like Velveeta.”

While we enjoyed our morning melt, we also stocked up on some other delicacy essentials. My favorite and most unique find: Broccoli Rabe and Ricotta Raviolis. I’ve already purchased them two weekends in a row with my homemade Sicilian marinara sauce courtesy of my husband’s grandmother and served with a fresh Tuscan Log from Amy’s Bread next door to Murray’s.
